MLK HoliDAY Of Service!

The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday has become synonymous with “A Day of Service”; volunteerism. When January 16th rolls around, the usual volunteer opportunities come to mind like, Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Homeless Shelters, etc. This year, why not make “A Day of Service” personal to you and your community.

To make MLK Jr, Day personal, tailor your Day of Service to match your talents. For example, if you are a musician, you can go to a retirement home and play the flute, clarinet, violin, piano, or guitar for the seniors; they would love to get a mini concert. Even if the only song you know is “Jingle Bells,” just play it five times and the retirees will be thrilled! If you are good at reading, perhaps you can read out loud to children at your local library. Every library has a children’s section with a storybook hour. Bring your favorite kid’s book and read it with enthusiasm. The kids will love you and the librarians, too! If you are good at woodworking, you can build birdhouses and garden boxes for your subdivision. Or, repair the broken fence in your neighborhood.

Even if you feel you lack a special talent, you can shovel snow for all the elderly people on your block (North) Or, cut the grass for all the seniors in your neighborhood. (South) Or, plant a garden in a vacant lot to grow veggies for the community. Or, start a Craft Club for the kids on your block.

There are so many ways One Person can be “Of Service” to make the World a better place! Martin Luther King, Jr. would be proud.
